A team that has lived on the edge all year long, winning five times in overtime and once in penalty kicks in the postseason, had their hearts broken on Friday afternoon.

Mt. Carmel beat Jacksonville by a score of 2-1 by way of an 8-7 penalty kick score in the 2A semifinal.

Cesar Cosio scored with 9 seconds left in the first half to put Mt. Carmel up 1-0 but like they always do, Jacksonville battled back and Steven Albers scored with 12 minutes to play in regulation.

Neither team found the back of the net in overtime and the game headed to penalty kicks where Mt. Carmel missed their first one, but Sergio Valencia was able to save Jacksonville’s final attempt so it was 4-4 and we headed to five more shooters. Mt. Carmel made their first three and Jacksonville missed their third so the Caravans advance to the state championship.

Jacksonville will play for third place at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
