Deron Powell Power Rankings Week 3: CS8 & Sangamo

 CS8

Listen to the guys here:

1. Rochester – We have a new No. 1 team at the top of the CS8 Power Rankings. Why? Derek Leonard’s offense has looked even more flawless than we expected, which is scary. Quarterback Nic Baker has become a little bit more comfortable with more reps and D’Ante’ Cox, Avante’ Cox and Collin Stallworth could be among the best trio of wide receivers in the state. The biggest thing concerning Rochester, though, is that the Rockets defense has appeared to improve dramatically. They’ll get their biggest test of the short season against Gavin Webb and Southeast this Friday

2. SHG – Through two games, the Cyclones have already rushed for 791 yards and 11 touchdowns, led by Tremayne Lee’s 374 yards and Tristan Blair’s 181 yards. SHG’s secondary appears to be a concern thus far. Amir and Armon Brummet had success against the Cyclones defensive backs and if you match up Rochester’s elite trio against the Cyclones defensive backs, the Rockets would seem to have the edge. The Cyclones also haven’t developed a deep threat in the passing game. If SHG wants to get back to its state championship-caliber level, the Cyclones will need to improve in those two areas.

3. Eisenhower – Eisenhower had a breeze against Lincoln in week two, returning back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns. Cayleb Dehority and Stephon Bobbitt linked up for three touchdowns in abbreviated action. When that offense gets clicking, the Panthers look scary. We’ll get a better indication as to how good Eisenhower is this Friday, as the Panthers travel to Jacksonville.

4. Glenwood – Following an impressive week one victory against Southeast, there was some hype surrounding Glenwood’s week two matchup at Rochester. From the jump, the Titans looked out of sorts, committing a litany of turnovers that quickly caused the game to get out of hand. Glenwood has a prized opportunity to get back on track, throwback style in week three vs. Lanphier at Glenwood Middle School.

5.  Southeast – We mentioned after week one, that SHG’s Tremayne Lee possessed that “Wow” factor. Spartans senior cornerback / defensive back Gavin Webb belongs in that category. Webb is a player who has a multifaceted skill set. He’s accounted for 11 touchdowns through three games, but also gives coach Matt Lauber a shutdown corner on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, weapons have emerged for Webb to throw to in Adrian Greene, Mark Johnson and Trevyon Williams. Defensively, the Spartans made huge strides in a week two thumping against Lanphier. If Southeast’s defense can come up with stops throughout the year, the offensive unit has the potential to carry Southeast to a playoff appearance.

6. Jacksonville – The Crimsons brass admitted that Springfield High outplayed them during stretches of their week two matchup against the Senators, but Jacksonville was able to make big plays and limit mental errors during crunch time to escape with a win. Avery Dugan showed some growth from week one. That’s paramount for Mark Grounds’ team. The Crimsons face a tall task in Eisenhower on Friday night.

7. Springfield – The Senators squandered a golden opportunity to climb the power rankings and make a statement to the CS8 with a week two win against Jacksonville. The Senators turned the rock over five times, but still had a chance late in the fourth quarter to move to 2-0. You can see the potential that Springfield has, but the Senators will need to correct those crucial lapses that have been detrimental to them in recent years. The Senators face MacArthur in week three. Leading us to…

8. MacArthur – The Generals certainly made things interesting for SHG last Friday. The Brummett brothers are something special. Quarterback, Amir and wide receiver, Armon have game breaking ability. That alone will make MacArthur competitive this season.

9. Lanphier – There’s always hype surrounding a Lanphier – Southeast matchup, but that rivalry was completely one-sided last Saturday. The Spartans dominated the Lions. Lanphier’s depth is extremely thin, which could result in a long season on the north side.

10. Lincoln – The hype and excitement surrounding a new regime has quickly come back to reality, but on the bright side, the Rail Splitters scored 16 points against Eisenhower in week two. If they can do that in week three against SHG, maybe Lincoln can look at that as a moral victory.
