Deron Powell State Farm Power Rankings: Week 7

CS8

1. SHG (6-0) Should the Cyclones fall out of first in the rankings because they didn’t put a running clock on Glenwood? Not likely. SHG has two more before the Leonard Bowl, then we’ll see if they drop to number two.

2. Rochester (6-0) The Rockets are rolling right through the regular season as planned. A trip to Jacksonville this week pits two of the top two quarterbacks in the CS8, but Ziegler is at the top and will likely stay there. He’s the real deal.

3. Eisenhower (4-2) The Panthers put it on Lanphier to help Eisenhower celebrate their homecoming last week in impressive fashion so they stay at the top of the “best of the rest”. Cayleb Dehority is throwing his way to the top of the quarterbacks list in the CS8 this year and that’s some elite company.

4. Glenwood (3-3)  The Titans showed some grit putting on a solid showing against the best team in 6A football in week six. That being said, Glenwood is still looking for a way to get to five wins. Coach Rourke’s crew needs a win over the Senators this week with a date looming in week eight with Ike.

5. Jacksonville (4-2) Joe Brannan and the boys got back on track with a stomping of MacArthur last week so they leave the dreaded seven spot for someone else. Coach Grounds’ group will host Rochester with a chance to make a splash in the CS8, but they get Lincoln next week for a shot at that much needed fifth win.

6. Southeast (3-3) The Spartans know that their backs are against the wall. They did what they had to do by beating Springfield, by three scores no less. Now they have to clip either Eisenhower or Sacred Heart-Griffin in the next two weeks in order to have a shot to beat MacArthur in week nine and lock up a playoff spot.

7. Lanphier (2-4) It’s the Lions turn to take over the dreaded seven spot in the power rankings after they got crushed by Eisenhower. Things don’t get much easier this week, as Lanphier will host Sacred Heart-Griffin.

8. Springfield High (2-4) The Senators needed a win over Southeast on homecoming and turned that chance over in the second half. Now Roy Gully’s guys can play spoiler to a couple teams in their final three weeks while fighting to win three straight and sneak into the playoffs.

9. MacArthur (0-6) If there’s a chance for a win, it’s this week when the Generals take on Lincoln in the battle of the CS8 winless.

10. Lincoln (0-6) They have scored just one touchdown this year, but will have a much better opportunity this week against winless MacArthur.

1. North Mac (6-0) The Panthers may have fallen in the state rankings, but we know how good this team is. After stomping Athens, North Mac has to be sure not to look ahead to a matchup of likely unbeatens in their non-conference game against Chester during week eight. One week at a time.

2. New Berlin (5-1) The Pretzels are for real. It’s time to give them their due. Their only loss is to a North Mac team that pulled away in the second half and that was week one. They dominated an injury-riddled Plains team last week, but you can only beat the teams that you play. New Berlin can show they belong right with North Mac in the next two weeks by taking care of Athens and Auburn.

3. Pleasant Plains (3-3) Jacob Cronister missed last week’s game and still leads the area in passing yards on the season. The Cardinals have to get healthy in a hurry, but with Pittsfield and Porta in the coming weeks, they’ll have that chance to get to the coveted five wins.

4. Williamsville (3-3) Yes, the Bullets are .500, but they’ve lost to the top three teams in our power rankings and they were all great games. Williamsville took care of Pittsfield last week and will get Porta this week. Getting to five wins means you are likely in, no matter how you get them.

5. Auburn (3-3) Dave Bates’ boys took care of business in Porta last week to get to .500 again, but suffered a tough blow with Nick Geoghegan's greusome ankle injury. The non-conference game this Saturday becomes very important with New Berlin looming in week eight.

6. Athens (3-3) The Warriors took one on the chin against the undefeated Panthers at home last week and now have to find two wins in their next three games against New Berlin, Williamsville and Pleasant Plains.

7. Riverton (1-5) The Hawks tried to keep their playoff hopes alive last week in their non-conference game but that didn’t turn out well. Now Riverton can simply play spoiler for the rest of the season.

8. Pittsfield (1-5) The Saukees put up points against the Bullets last week. Now they can try to knock off Plains before taking on a Riverton team in week eight as both will likely be looking for their second win.

9. Porta (0-6) Sam Wenda and the Bluejays continue to show some fight. That’s a great start for the Porta program.
